Common Questions About RV Parks and Camping in Key West
Key West welcomes the RV community, especially the snowbirds, all year long! Its single highway makes it easy to navigate; however, its dated streets and lack of large parking lots can cause difficulties when trying to explore the island with a larger RV.
Not to mention, the two seasons, high and low, lead to totally different experiences.
The former is often more crowded and expensive while the latter sees less people and lower prices.
Here are some common questions to help you navigate Key West in your RV more easily.
Can I camp my RV anywhere in Key West?
Key West does not allow recreational vehicles camp on their city streets overnight.
In fact, as I’ve mentioned, parking in general can be difficult. Your best bet would be to park your RV at a resort or campground and then use another means of transportation to get around.
If you don’t have a smaller towable vehicle to use, you can rent a golf cart. They are cheap, street legal, and widely accessible.
What’s the average cost of campgrounds in Key West?
There are only a few campgrounds in Key West, most of which lie within state parks. Therefore, the average price leans towards the statewide camping fee—$30.
Fortunately, these state regulated campsites feature great amenities and clean facilities in an effort to meet government standards.
Furthermore, the price won’t fluctuate between the high and low seasons. It’s a great option for those okay with less amenities.
Are there RV size restrictions for Key West highways?
Yes! Interstate US-1 requires RVs wider than 10 feet to use the far-right lane, and prohibits vehicles any wider than 12 feet.
Unfortunately, US-1 provides the only road into the Florida Keys so if your rig exceeds these restrictions you’ll need a different way of getting to Key West.
How much on average does it cost to stay in an RV Park in Key West?
These prices vary widely according to season and RV size. In the low season (summer), the prices range from $50-$70 a night, while in the high season (winter) they range from $80-$100.
The summer is the low season due to hot, humid weather and frequent hurricanes.
You can expect more retirees in the winter due to cooler weather and less turbulent weather.
Are pets allowed at RV Parks and Campgrounds?
Yes, pets are allowed at all RV Parks and Campgrounds in Key West, but many charge a fee, and some prohibit certain dog breeds.
These include ‘aggressive breeds’, though the specific breeds are often never defined by the RV Park and Campground.
Always register your pet, and keep it on a leash, as failing to do so can lead to a fine, or expulsion from the grounds.
Is RV Parking Easy to Find in Key West?
Finding parking for a large rig in Key West is nearly impossible. RVs less than 18ft may find parking fairly easy but there’s limited space, and in the high season you may find nothing.
Your best bet would be to leave your rig at the RV Park or Campground and rent a golf cart. Their cheap, street legal, and widely accessible.
Key West has attracted pirates, presidents and playwrights for centuries! Go see why, while staying at one of these magnificent RV Parks and Campgrounds.
