3. Hi Jolly’s Tomb

Hi Jolly’s Tomb

Have you ever looked around the Arizona desert and thought to yourself: there should be camels here.

Well, you’re not alone, the U.S. government did too! In 1856 Jefferson Davis, Secretary of War at the time, approved a plan to bring camels into the desert for transportation and parcel delivery.

As a result, 33 camels landed in Texas along with a man named Haiji Ali, their caretaker.

Over time, the other members of the ‘Camel Corps’ started to call this man Hi Jolly. He gained fame throughout the region until the entire operation was eventually cancelled.

Saddened by these turns of events, but still encouraged to live in the United States, Hi Jolly decided to settle in Quartzsite where he finally passed away.

The locals loved him so much that they erected a tomb for the man. It’s still there today, in the form of a pyramid with a camel on top.

This unusual roadside attraction brings in thousands of visitors every year!

For more information visit the Hi Jolly’s Tomb website.

Now you have at least ten good reasons to visit Quartzsite. Don’t miss your opportunity to visit this winter and meet some new friends! Please tell us about your Arizona trip in the comments below!
