Have you ever looked around the Arizona desert and thought there should be camels here?
Well, you’re not alone; the U.S. government did too! In 1856 Jefferson Davis, Secretary of War approved a plan to bring camels into the desert for transportation and parcel delivery.
As a result, 33 camels landed in Texas, along with a man named Haiji Ali, their caretaker.
Over time, the other members of the ‘Camel Corps’ started to call this man Hi Jolly. He gained fame throughout the region until the entire operation was eventually canceled.
Saddened by these events but still encouraged to live in the United States, Hi Jolly settled in Quartzsite, where he finally passed away.
The locals loved him so much that they erected a tomb for the man. It’s still there today as a pyramid with a camel.
This unusual roadside attraction brings in thousands of visitors every year!
